We are a family of four – Heidi, Nick, Finn (7) and Saff (4) – who plan to embark on a round the world family gap year, in 2020. There are so many practical and logistical considerations in planning this trip; including whether to sell, rent or airbnb our home, how to save up for the trip, how much it will cost, where we’ll go, how long we’ll stay in each country, what we’ll visit, which elements will be thrifty and where we intend to splurge, how we’ll educate the children, what visas, injections and travel gear we’ll need, whether we’ll book round-the-world tickets or individual flights – and so much more! We’ll be posting all of our research and findings here, to help move ourselves forward and make this trip a reality and to help you figure out if this is something you could do too.
In addition to all the practical elements of planning family travel, I’m also planning to address some of the emotional ones – charting our hopes and fears in home educating the kids whilst we travel, worries about financing, fears about safety, considerations on the impact of returning home and the challenges of re-settling. Many blogs share the beauty and wonder of travel and many are written by those already embarking on their journeys. I hope by starting this blog before we travel we’ll be able to share some different insights into the travel process and the practicalities and logistics of organising world travel with kids.
